To cancel Xfinity internet, you call 1-800-XFINITY (1-800-934-6489), schedule a callback from your account, or go to an Xfinity Store. Those are the three routes Xfinity's own cancel page lists. Standard Xfinity internet has no cancel button online. The one exception is NOW Internet, the prepaid plan, which you can cancel in the NOW portal.

Cancelling doesn't end when you hang up. You still have to return the equipment, and Xfinity's customer agreement gives you ten days for that, not the 30 that most guides quote. And if you were hoping to hand the whole job to an AI assistant, there's a newer catch: since July 2026, Xfinity's agreement prohibits using an AI agent for support and sales calls, phone calls included, unless Xfinity expressly allows it. We make a tool that lets AI assistants place phone calls, so we checked that clause closely. It's covered near the end.

Everything below was checked against Xfinity's support pages, its agreement and the relevant statutes on October 20, 2026. Where Xfinity's own pages disagree, we say so.

The official ways to cancel Xfinity internet

Xfinity's cancel page puts it in one sentence: "If you need to cancel, call us at 1-800-934-6489, schedule a call or visit an Xfinity Store." The agreement points back to that page, saying you must notify Xfinity "in one of the ways listed on xfinity.com/cancel."

PhoneCall 1-800-934-6489 (1-800-XFINITY)Xfinity doesn't publish the line's hours. A staff member on Xfinity's forums wrote in August 2026 that most customer service teams work 7:00 AM to midnight Eastern.

NOW Internet onlyCancel online in the NOW portalApplies only to prepaid NOW plans. After activation, service stops at once and the rest of the period isn't refunded. Turning off autopay instead keeps service to the end of the cycle.

Chat is not on that list. Customers on Xfinity's forums report that chat and the Xfinity Assistant set up a callback rather than closing the account, and one quoted a chat agent saying "We need a verbal confirmation to cancel the service." Some third-party guides still say you can cancel through chat or an online form. Xfinity's own pages don't offer either for standard internet.

If you have Xfinity Mobile, that is a separate account with its own number, 1-888-936-4968.

Before you call: a five-minute checklist

The call is shorter when you have the answers ready. Gather these first:

  • Your account number and service address. The account number is on your bill and in your online account.
  • Access to the phone or email on the account. Xfinity staff on its forums say a six-digit code may at times be sent there to confirm it's you. Only read a code out on a call you placed yourself to the official number.
  • Whether you have a term agreement. Sign in, open the Account icon, then Account and Identity, then Legal agreements and contracts. Current internet plans have no contract, but some older plans did.
  • The date you want service to end.
  • What else is on the account. Cancelling internet can change the price of Xfinity Mobile (more on that below), and a comcast.net email address stays active only if you keep logging in.

Only two kinds of users can disconnect the account: the account holder (Xfinity calls them "Primary") and a "Manager", which Xfinity labels an authorized user. Members and Viewers can't.

How the cancellation call goes

Xfinity publishes no script, so this is the usual shape of the call, not official steps.

  1. Get through the phone menu. Some guides suggest saying "cancel service" at the voice prompt.
  2. Verify your identity. Expect to confirm your details. A code may go to the phone or email on the account.
  3. State the request plainly. "I'd like to cancel my internet service, effective [date]."
  4. Hear out or decline the offer. See the next section.
  5. Leave with proof. Before you hang up, ask for a confirmation or reference number, the disconnect date, and the representative's name, and ask whether a confirmation email will follow. Write it all down.

Xfinity publishes no hold-time data, and we won't guess. Give yourself time.

Handling the retention offer

Expect to be offered a reason to stay. Xfinity's cancel page does this itself: next to the ways to cancel, it promotes moving your service, lowering your bill, pausing service and flexible payments, and one version of the page also pitches adding Xfinity Mobile.

What gets offered on the call varies, and Xfinity doesn't publish it. Third-party guides report monthly discounts, one-time credits and speed upgrades. One customer on Xfinity's forums wrote in February 2026 that the only offer was "$5 if, and only if, you get our mobile phone". Two things are worth knowing:

  • An Xfinity forum representative has said "New customer promotions will not be available to existing customers," and that cancelling and reopening to get new-customer pricing would violate policy.
  • If you've decided, you can keep repeating the same sentence. "Thanks, but I'd like to go ahead and cancel today" works better than arguing about the offer.

If an offer genuinely beats the alternative, take it, but get the new price, the length of the discount, and any conditions confirmed in writing.

If the phone route isn't working

  • Go to a store. It's an official route, and it settles the equipment at the same time. A third-party guide says to bring photo ID, which is sensible either way.
  • Post on Xfinity's community forum. It isn't official policy, but Xfinity's forum staff have processed cancellations by direct message. In one thread a representative wrote that the team could help with "processing your cancellation request without requiring you to call us."
  • Mail. One version of Xfinity's cancel page gives a mailing address (Comcast Cable, ATTN: Service Change Requests, 1701 JFK Blvd., Philadelphia, PA) and asks for your name, service address, account number and phone number. The standard cancel page didn't show this when we checked, so treat it as a fallback, and use tracked mail.

Return your Xfinity equipment within 10 days

This is the part that costs people money. Section 9(c) of the Residential Services Agreement says you must return all Xfinity equipment "within ten (10) days of the date on which the Services are disconnected", in working order apart from normal wear and tear, or you'll be charged an unreturned equipment fee.

Xfinity's support pages give more room. Its refunds article says charges "may be added" if rented equipment isn't returned within 30 days. Both are Xfinity documents. Since the agreement is the stricter one, plan on 10 days.

Returning equipment is free. You have two options:

  • An Xfinity Store. Hand the equipment to a representative. Xfinity says it's removed from your account right away, and you get a receipt.
  • UPS. Use the prepaid label from a recent shipment, or print one at xfinity.com/returns. That page works even after you've disconnected, but you'll need your Xfinity ID and password. Any box will do. Send only the device, remote and power cord, not HDMI, Ethernet or coax cables. Drop it at any UPS location, or call 1-800-PICK-UPS to have it collected.

Keep the proof. For UPS, Xfinity says to keep the top part of the label with the tracking number, because "This will be your receipt", and to allow up to two weeks for the return to show on your account.

We couldn't find the fee amounts on any Comcast or Xfinity page. A Comcast price list we checked says only that the "actual charge is a function of equipment in use." The figures you'll see on other sites aren't from Xfinity, so we've left them out. One reassuring detail from Section 7(b): if you pay the fee and later return the equipment undamaged, the fee is refunded in full.

If you live in an Xfinity Communities building where the gateway came pre-installed, Xfinity says to leave it in the unit. Returning it can trigger fees.

Your final bill, fees and refunds

Early termination fees. Xfinity says its current internet plans have "no annual contract or early termination fee. You can cancel any time without a penalty." Older plans sometimes did come with a term agreement. If yours has one, the agreement says you "may be charged an early termination fee" and tells you to check the terms for details. The legal-agreements page in your account, mentioned in the checklist, is where to look.

Proration. Some guides promise you're charged only to the day you disconnect. Xfinity is vaguer: its FAQ says the final bill "may have items not on prior bills, like prorates or equipment charges." The agreement reserves Comcast the right to keep service, and billing, running through the end of the billing cycle, so read the final bill line by line.

Refunds. If you're owed money, Xfinity reviews the account once all equipment is back, or 30 days after disconnection. A credit balance goes first to anything you still owe. Refunds usually go back to your last payment method and typically arrive 4 to 6 weeks after all refund requirements are met. If that payment method can't take the refund, amounts over $500 come as a mailed check, typically within 5 to 8 weeks. Credits issued for service problems may not be refundable.

Disputes. The agreement (Section 3(l)) gives you 120 days from the date on a bill to dispute it. After that you waive the dispute, subject to applicable law.

Xfinity Mobile. Mobile plans are priced lower when you also have Xfinity internet, TV or voice, so cancelling internet can raise your Mobile bill if it's your last Xfinity service. Xfinity's pages disagree on how much. One says plans bought or upgraded on or after April 22, 2026 lose the $10 Multi-Product Discount, but "You won't be charged a $25 standalone mobile fee." Xfinity's cancellation FAQ says there's "a $25 monthly fee per account if you have the latest price plan." Ask the representative which applies to your account before you cancel.

comcast.net email. It stays active if you logged in during the 90 days before you disconnect. After that, you have to log in at least once every nine months.

Moving or pausing instead

If you're cancelling because you're moving, check first whether Xfinity serves the new address. You can transfer service online at xfinity.com/moving up to 30 days before you move in. Xfinity says there's no early termination fee when you keep Xfinity, and you won't be billed for a gap in service. If you're moving out of Xfinity's area, cancel as usual and return the equipment before you go.

If you're away for part of the year, the Seasonal Convenience Plan puts service on hold at reduced rates. Xfinity's seasonal page currently says 2 to 9 months, up to twice a year (earlier versions said 2 to 6 months, once a year). A slow 20/10 Mbps connection costs $20 a month. With no connection at all, it's $8 a month, though that option isn't available to Xfinity Home customers. Availability varies by area.

If the account holder has died, there's a separate process. Use Xfinity's bereavement page to close or transfer the account and upload either a death certificate, or a government photo ID along with Xfinity's affidavit form. The disconnect date can be up to 120 days in the past.

Can someone else cancel for you?

Yes, if you make them a Manager. The account holder can add one online under Account and Identity, then Account Details. Pick "Add someone new" and choose the Manager role. The invite expires after 72 hours, and you'll verify your identity to make the change. A Manager can then disconnect the account. Xfinity's Account Change Request form covers harder cases, such as power of attorney, military deployment or an account holder who is incapacitated.

Can your AI assistant make the cancellation call?

Technically, yes. Tools like ours, DialMCP, let assistants such as Claude or ChatGPT place a real phone call, wait on hold, press through menus and report back. But Xfinity's agreement now says not to. Section 8 lists, among prohibited uses:

"Allowing, enabling, or causing the deployment of an AI Agent (unless we expressly grant you permission otherwise) to access, use, interact with, or take action on any of the Services. Examples include ... engaging in support or sales interactions with us regarding the Services, such as verbal interactions via telephone."

The agreement defines an AI agent broadly, as any software that takes action "on behalf of, or at the instruction of, you". Calling from your own phone number doesn't change that. Archived copies of the agreement show the clause was added between June 19 and July 12, 2026. The agreement also lets Comcast suspend or terminate service when a customer violates it. We found no reports of the clause being enforced against a cancellation call, and we're not making any claim about whether it's enforceable. Still, the text is clear.

Our advice, as the people who build an AI calling tool: don't send an AI agent to Xfinity's phone line, ours included. DialMCP calls open by saying they're an AI assistant calling on your behalf. So the representative would know straight away, and under the agreement's wording you could be found in breach. Verification codes are a second problem. Xfinity may send a code to your phone or email to confirm it's you, and its fraud page says "Never share a verification code with anyone." Handing one to software that's on the line for you is a security risk. There's a practical limit too: DialMCP caps every call at 10 minutes, and a long hold on a busy support line could use that up.

An assistant is still useful here, just off the phone. It can read your bill and find out whether you have a term agreement. It can draft your checklist and the one-sentence script, and set a reminder for day 8 of the 10-day return window.

Many other calls are a fair fit for an AI agent: changing a reservation, moving an appointment, checking an order or asking about opening hours, wherever the other side is happy to talk to an AI. Our guide to what an assistant can do on a call covers those, and our safety rules explain the limits every DialMCP call follows. One of those rules: if the person on the line objects to talking to an AI, the agent apologizes and hangs up.

What the law says about cancelling

You may have read that a federal "click-to-cancel" rule makes companies let you cancel online. It doesn't apply. The FTC's 2024 rule was vacated by the Eighth Circuit on July 8, 2025. The FTC restored the old rule text in February 2026 and in March asked for comment on whether to amend it again, but no new rule has been proposed or adopted. An FCC inquiry opened in 2024 hasn't produced a rule either.

California's AB 2863 requires online cancellation for customers who signed up online, and it limits retention pitches, for contracts entered, amended or extended on or after July 1, 2025. But the law it amends exempts businesses that operate under a franchise issued by a local government or the CPUC, or that are regulated by the CPUC or the FCC. Comcast operates under franchises and is regulated by the FCC, so Xfinity internet very likely falls outside it. We found no ruling that settles the question.

In practice, the routes on xfinity.com/cancel are the ones that work.

For calls where an AI is welcome. Changing a reservation, moving an appointment, checking an order: add https://mcp.dialmcp.com/mcp to Claude, ChatGPT, Codex or Cursor, verify your own mobile number, and your assistant can place the call and read back the transcript. Free during launch.

FAQ

Can I cancel Xfinity internet online?

Not for standard Xfinity internet. Xfinity's cancel page lists three routes: call 1-800-934-6489, schedule a callback after signing in, or visit an Xfinity Store. The exception is NOW Internet, the prepaid plan, which you can cancel online in the NOW portal.

What number do I call to cancel Xfinity internet?

Call 1-800-XFINITY, which is 1-800-934-6489. Xfinity Mobile has its own number, 1-888-936-4968. Xfinity doesn't publish the phone line's hours.

How long do I have to return Xfinity equipment after cancelling?

Xfinity's Residential Services Agreement says 10 days after disconnection. Its support pages say unreturned equipment charges may be added after 30 days. Plan on 10. Returns are free at an Xfinity Store or by UPS with a prepaid label, and you should keep the receipt or the tracking stub.

Is there a fee to cancel Xfinity internet?

Xfinity says its current internet plans have no annual contract or early termination fee. Some older plans had a term agreement that can carry an early termination fee, so check Legal agreements in your account. Unreturned equipment is charged separately, and that fee is refunded in full if you later return the equipment undamaged.

Can an AI assistant cancel Xfinity for me?

Xfinity's agreement, since July 2026, prohibits using an AI agent for support or sales interactions with Xfinity, including phone calls, unless Xfinity expressly allows it. To have another person cancel for you, add them to the account as a Manager, which Xfinity treats as an authorized user.
